2019 Olivier Award Predictions

The Olivier’s are almost here and I can’t wait to see who nabs the most awards and who the surprise winners will be.

I am excited that there aren’t any ‘obvious’ winners unlike last year it makes the whole event so much more thrilling!

So with that in mind here are my top Olivier Award predictions…

Best New Musical

Fun Home, Come From Away, SIX, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical

Come From Away – It was a veeerryyyyy close category this year but I think Come From Away has nabbed it. Although Tina and SIX are obviously all well deserving I have a feeling that a classic(ish) non juke box musical is what the big wigs will go for. Plus it’s my favourite so I hope it wins!

Best Musical Revival

Company, Caroline, Or Change, The King and I

Duh! Company was a fresh take on an old favourite and made Stephen Sondheim’s classic relevant again! Plus The King and I is way too problematic.

Best New Play

The Inheritance, The Lehman Trilogy, Misty, Sweat

I did see the inheritance but everyone I knew who saw it said it was amazing plus the critics reviews were all impressive.

Best Play Revival

Summer and Smoke, King Lear, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Price

I’m really not sure who will take this one, although I hope it’s Summer and Smoke. It’s definitely a strong contender and was just absolutely fabulous!

Best New Comedy

Home, I’m Darling, Nine Night, Quiz

Quiz just sought of came and went, Nine Night was so good but I think Home, I’m Darling is going to take this one.

Best Actor

Arinze Kene, Ian McKellen, Kyle Soller, David Suchet, Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Ben Miles

I didn’t see Misty but I feel like all the other options are just too obvious for 2019. I think the Olivier Awards are starting to wake up to seemingly ‘less traditional’ (and my that I mean white and middle class)  forms of theatre which makes Arinze and his one man show Misty a strong contender.

Best Actress

Patsy Ferran, Sophie Okonedo, Katherine Parkinson, Eileen Atkinson, Gillian Anderson

I may be a biased but this woman DESERVES THIS SO MUCH! Her performance in Summer and Smoke was simply spellbinding and I feel like she is on course for a huge career.

Best Director

Stephen Daldry, Marianne Elliott, Christopher Ashley, Rebecca Frecknall, Sam Mendes

I really feel like 2019 has been a stand-out year for Elliot, with regards to Company, but Daldry directed the The Inheritance, an equally as impressive and important production.  Sooooo I really can’t call this one.

Best Actor In A Musical

Marc Antolin, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Zubin Varla, Ken Watanabe

Oh gosh I really don’t know with this one. I didn’t see any of the productions so I can’t compare any of them off my own experience… again I can’t call it.

Best Actress in a Musical

Adrienne Warren, Sharon D. Clarke, Rosalie Craig, Kelli O’Hara

This is a really tough category but Adrienne Warren literally took London by storm when she opened Tina – The Tina Turner Musical. With a Tony nomination already to her name I think the 2019 Olivier is Warren!

I know that these aren’t all the categories but this are the ones I have most investment in!

What are your 2019 Olivier Award nominations?

Till Next Time,

Abigail xx
